WRITING

I love writing. I really do.

 

First and foremost, I love the English language. Somehow it manages to be flexible, idiosyncratic and poetic but also razor sharp, direct and focused. I love the quirks of spelling, the double meanings (foundation of many a good joke) and the layers of history. I love the constant learning curve of being a linguist. I love bending the rules.

Language is at the core of everything we do, and for me, it wields the greatest power when it goes unnoticed. When it inspires without being flowery, informs without tying itself in knots. The very heart of communication.

​

So yes, I love crafting a coherent message from this complex language. I take great joy in getting under an audience's skin and learning how to speak to them. I also very much enjoy helping others get their brand - their identity - down on paper.

On the more technical side, I find it incredibly rewarding to work with clients on bid writing and new business generation - employing my language skills to weave technical information into an engaging, inspiring pitch. Understanding who will be awarding the contract and how to speak to them. Using my neutral position to interview subject matter experts, pull out the core messages and present everything in an easily-digestible, clear and concise response that enhances your chance of success.

Over the years I've also learned the huge importance of supporting creativity with strong processes, documentation and planning. I've worked on distilling brand identity, writing a comprehensive style guide, developing a content management system. Laying the groundwork for consistency and scalability. In more recent times I've worked closely with Generative AI, prompt engineering, understanding how it can be useful in the creative process and, crucially, where it cannot.
